Botswana and Namibia clash over elephant poaching

Featured Image

VENTURES AFRICA – A diplomatic row has erupted between Southern African neighbours, Namibia and Botswana, after Botswana border patrol soldiers shot and killed three Namibian elephant poachers.

Last week, Botswana Defence Forces (BDF) said that its patrol team deployed in the Kwando area in northern Botswana shot and killed three poachers who were in possession of elephant tusks. “BDF commended Namibian rangers for information, which led to the successful interception of the poachers. The matter had since been handed over to Botswana Police Service for conclusion,” said Botswana Defence Force in a statement. However Namibia government  condemned the killing of its  nationals saying “Namibia does not condone poaching, but called for restraint when using force.”

Tshekedi Khama, Botswana’s Environment and Tourism Minister, revealed recently that the country’s government had adopted a “shoot-to-kill” policy against poachers as a radical measure to curb the mass slaughter of elephants in the country.

An increase in poaching has heightened the chances of a decline in elephant numbers. Over 40,000 elephants were killed since 2011, a 3 percent loss to the total number of elephants on the continent.

A recent joint-report by conservation group, Born Free USA, and C4ADS revealed that governments of seven African countries are supporting elephant poaching and illegal ivory trade. The report showed that senior government officials in DR Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Gabon and Mozambique are condoning and arming criminals who kill elephants and rhinos for their tusks and horns, respectively.

Lumie Clear Acne Treatment Light: farewell bad skin and topical treatments

Featured Image

Firstly, to describe the skin Lumie Clear was used on: the forehead was fairly clear and the problematic areas were generally the cheeks and along the jaw.

I started using Lumie Clear and saw a difference within a few days. I didn’t rush to jump to conclusions and wanted to use the product for a good few weeks before arriving at a final decision – and it works!

Generally, sunbathing helps out with the acne and a sunkissed look sorts the appearance of spots, but let’s be realistic, we aren’t getting that strong a sun anytime soon here in Britain. So, this really did seem like the next best thing.

In the past I have also used topical treatments from all sorts of drug stores and brands, to no joy. Have Lumie Clear work with the efficiency it did, came as a blessing!

Using it daily, for 15 minutes in the affected area (as advised), progress was slow, but sure. First, the redness of spots subsided, and the very sore spots disappeared over the first few weeks, and gradually Lumie Clear addressed the rest of the skin issues, like leftover scars from older spots. Whilst, the process is time-consuming, it can be done while watching TV or other everyday activities, so all in all, it is not at all a mission, which you have to reschedule your day around!

Our skin tends to be the first point of contact and generally defines our self-confidence and self-esteem – I must say this product helped me boost both as it made a significant impact on my skin, for the better. I don’t have to worry about make up (saving me 30 minutes of extra sleep in the morning) and my confidence with my skin has been better than ever. I would definitely recommend this product and make sure it is used as advised, without fail.

Black women in the U.S. and the African tradition of bare chests as a freedom cry

Featured Image

VENTURES AFRICA – Yesterday a group of black women protested topless in the streets of San Francisco. Even though topless protests are not necessarily new, yesterday’s protest was different. In tandem with the #sayhername campaign, women throughout the United States organized to rally against the continued dismissal of violence against black women in the U.S. If victims such as Rekia Boyd and Aiyana Stanley-Jones’s stories have been harder to hear, they, and many others would argue that it is mostly because America (and the rest world) hasn’t been listening.

The method of protest, in addition to the call to end the current state of violence against black women and girls in the United States has caused a lot of controversy, which is one of the many reasons they decided to block the city’s financial district during rush hour in the first place. A last resort.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Chinerye Tutashinda, founding member of the BlackOUT collective, notes that they were influenced by  “traditions from Nigeria, Gabon, Uganda, and South Africa, from women who bare their chests and other parts of their bodies in protest.”

no protests

The rally against continued dismissal

Black women, specifically throughout Africa have been using naked protests and genital cursing for centuries to express intolerance and other forms of resistance- referred to as the curse of nakedness. In Nigeria there is a stronger significance in protests by older women, or mothers specifically, who have the authority to question the acts of their “children,” while being on the verge of laying an everlasting curse on all offenders.

The importance of the history of this method has continued to remain evident in naked protests starting from the Aba Women’s riot of 1929 to those which have recently taken place in Nigeria and other parts of Africa . However, according to Barbara Sutton, the African context of naked protests can only be understood through an examination of African contexts of nudity, nakedness and dress- and it should be noted that even within Nigeria, understandings of the naked body varies between ethnic groups.

This instance of naked protest in San Francisco is particularly profound if we consider two things. It’s not the first time women in the U.S. have gone topless to make a point, but it is the first time in recent history that women in the west utilising the method have drawn attention to its African origin. Second, in milieu of cultural appropriation it almost allows us to consider the question- is this an example of good cultural borrowing?

While it remains unclear if the women in San Francisco were mothers, the point is not whether they utilised the method the same way as women in Nigeria or Gabon. Rather, we can consider the interconnected truths these women bare their bodies against. In December 2012 women in Ogun State used the curse of nakedness because they said hoodlums were invading their communities and the government was doing nothing to protect them. Similarly, in Kaduna this past September, women threatened to go nude if the government did not put an end to Boko Haram violence. While in Nigeria, and other parts of Africa the curse of nakedness in protest is usually a threat to go nude, rather than the act of going nude itself, one can see a comparison in terms of grievances from San Francisco all the way to Ekiti state. The women are saying our communities aren’t safe for us, our loved ones, or our children and this needs to stop, now.

As women in Nigeria continue to draw upon the method of protest with little interest from the general population, when women put their bodies on the line, we continue to hear: Is this effective, and what is the point? But we’re asking the wrong questions.

In contrast to #sayhername, the #freethenipple campaign in the U.S. is centred explicitly on the female body. While #freethenipple aims to “normalise the female breast”, the instances of black women utilising the curse of nakedness yesterday are not so focused on the corporeality of the body. More so, they reflect an intersectional awareness on global and local attacks on the black female body. A defence to the deaf ear on their subjugation, tormenting and suffering, in addition to the ways in which black female and trans bodies are simultaneously seen and unseen. Popular representation in the U.S. often highlights that interest remains in the spectacle of the black female body, rather than the reality of their existence in daily life.

What we have today is an example of the ways in which black women take heed to and draw from history. A way in which black women in the U.S. reflect the humanity of women throughout the globe in relation to the brutal and unjust experiences which they encounter everywhere. Even though this display of bravery is often dismissed, the nuances of the curse of nakedness illuminate its resonance in black women’s opposition to state sanctioned violence throughout the globe- something the world could hear, if we were listening.

My experience at the perfume studio: Why I may never buy branded perfume again

Featured Image

by Azeezat Fadekemi Sulaiman

A couple of months ago, I was invited by the Perfume Studio to one of their couture perfume making masterclasses. I’m not what you’d call a fragrance ‘freak’, nor do I spend crazy amounts of money buying perfumes, but I do like a good scent. For someone who is supposedly not crazy about perfumes, I am proud to say I have about 6 fragrances to my name, out of which my Chanel No.5 and Stella by Stella McCartney are my favourites.

From the above mentioned fragrances, you can sort of guess what my preferences are when it comes to scents- I’m a bit of an old soul, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of this perfumery ‘masterclass’, but I went along because it sounds like fun doesn’t it? Learning how to make your own perfume; I could just picture Madje and Bey mixing potions in some laboratory in Dubai as they created their own fragrances (and they turned out alright didn’t they?). Besides, what could possibly go wrong?

The Perfume Studio is a unique concept that offers clients (i.e ordinary mortals like you and I) the chance to create their own signature luxury fragrance using a range of 18 exquisite blends created by their in house master perfumer Francois Robert.

The masterclasses are held at various locations in London (this one was at the Hilton in Kensington) and they typically last for about 2 hours. On arrival, we were given an introduction into each perfume accord and what they meant. The perfumer also explained each note, their properties and how each relate to different personalities to help you choose the note that most appeals to you individually.

I discovered much to my consternation that I was more drawn to soft, flowery and seductive scents rather my usual choice of strong, musky (almost masculine) scents, which according to the perfumer means that I am quite something when it comes to my prowess with the opposite sex….quite flattering I must say considering I’m yet to unleash this hidden vixen on my poor unsuspecting husband.

IMG_2013 (1)

One of the things I liked most about the class was the friendly atmosphere and how long you were allowed to sample each of the 18 blends. Believe me, after putting about 6 fragrances to your nose, they’ll all begin to smell the same eventually, plus the perfumer also gave some handy tips on which notes marry well with each other and which ones may not work so well as well as guidelines as to quantity.

After about an hour and half of sniffing and making notes (I took this very seriously!), I had made my decision and I hoped to God it would come out nice. Then, it was time to choose my perfume bottle from the Perfume Studio’s impressive range of cases which ranged from posh silver and gold casings that could fit easily in a bag, to normal 30ml bottles and even pen size capsules.

Do it yourself Ultimate perfume set at the Perfume Studio.

Do it yourself Ultimate perfume set at the Perfume Studio.

We all waited as our perfumes were mixed and transferred into our chosen cases and voilà…I had myself a fragrance of my own creation. There was an added bonus of being able to name said fragrance, for which I chose my daughter’s name. I took a whiff of the fragrance and I dear say it was very much to my liking. It came out a flowery, sensual scent just the way I wanted and I loved it!

I’ve NEVER made anything by myself from scratch so I was very proud of myself for having made my own perfume and it’s an experience I would totally recommend you try at least once.

Your guide to Natural bridal hair this summer

Featured Image

by Temitope Beesley- Beauty Editor

One of the most important aspects for a bride on her wedding day is her hairstyle. Will she keep it simple and true to nature or experiment? Whatever the case might be you want to make sure the style will be hassle free and stress free. You also need to make sure it lasts all day.

I get questions from natural hair clients asking me which of these I’d recommend. Should they work with their natural hair or get a weave. I usually tell them if they are already feeling sceptical about putting in extensions that don’t even match their natural hair texture then they already know the answer. They should go with their natural hair, although they can still opt for adding some extensions that match their own texture for added volume, thickness and length.

Another important aspect to wearing your natural hair for your big day is to really take care of your hair. Weekly deep conditioning is a must. Give yourself at least 6 months to baby your tresses. Get a trim and protect your hair after all you want it to look the best it can when it’s on full display on the big day.

You should also research the best natural hair stylist in your area before the big day. When I say research, I mean call them, look for reviews on independent websites. Make sure they are truly a natural hair stylist and advocate, do they love to work with textured hair? You don’t want a scenario where they ask you to alter your hair texture in order to achieve a style that will last just a day or two.

Book an appointment to get a trial. Take along with you a few pictures of hairstyles you know your hair texture and length can achieve. It’s even better to send the stylist the pictures first along with your picture so he or she knows exactly what they are working with. Then they can recommend you bring some hair extensions that they think will work.

Most of all, enjoy your day! No matter what style you choose, you’d still look beautiful.

NL Recommends: Spring beauty Do’s and Don’ts

Featured Image

We’ve enlisted the help of the The Club Spa’s Spa Manager Lyndsey Jackson-Guy to take us through our paces on taking on Spring with our best possible bod.

Do’s

Do use SPF even when it still seems like winter! Wind and sun are one dynamic (and evil) duo for the skin. So when freezing temperatures and biting winds have left your skin dry, agitated, and pretty much in the fetal position, UV rays have a clear shot at your skin. Using SPF lotion all year round will add moisture to your skin and make it less prone to lines and wrinkles. In the summer months The Club Hotel & Spa has its very own Sunshine Butler on hand to provide guests with SPF sun cream.

Do keep things natural. Lotions using as many natural ingredients as possible are best as the skin can get very delicate during winter. Use a Herbal Steam room if you are looking to shed your winter weight. Herbal Steam rooms accelerate weight loss and a single steam session can burn as many as 600 calories! The Club Spa’s Herbal Steam Room also helps to eliminate toxins and leaves skin hydrated. The Herbal Steam Room is complimentary to use for all hotel and spa guests.

Do exfoliate. Central heating and icy weather play havoc with your complexion, making your skin look dull and feel horribly dry. Using an exfoliating scrub can help to shed dead skin to reveal softer, fresher skin. The Ayurvedic Master Facial at the Club Spa includes deep cleansing and exfoliation.

Do look after your hair. It’s not just your skin that gets neglected throughout the winter. During the colder months, hair can get dry and brittle from lack of vitamin D, so make sure you give your locks some love and attention once in a while too. For a natural remedy, the Salt Pool at The Club Spa contains essential minerals which can help to repair and protect damaged hair and make it shinier.

Don’ts

Don’t exfoliate too much as this can dry out your skin. This then can lead to the skin getting too oily as it tries to recover from being stripped. It is best to exfoliate your skin once a week.

Don’t just wrap up under warm layers and forget about looking after your body and skin during colder months. Harsh cold weather drains out the moisture in skin, however a body lotion will rehydrate and rejuvenate this. The Rasul Mud Room at The Club Spa is known for its healing properties. The Rasul Mud will leave your skin feeling soft and renewed as it will detoxify your skin and improve the texture.

Don’t stress. Massage is a proven powerful stress reliever which not only helps you unwind but can also help with long-term anxiety issues. The Shankara Bliss treatment at The Club Spa includes a face and scalp massage which aids relaxation – perfect for relieving stress. A happy person is a beautiful person.

Don’t stick with the same products all year around.  You may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in the summer.  But as weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine.  Find an “ointment” moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water-based for the colder months, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. (Hint: Many lotions labelled as “night creams” are oil-based.)

The Club Spa is home to an Indoor Salt Water Pool with Hydrotherapy Bench and Thermal Suite, comprising a Salt Cabin, Herbal Steam Room, Sauna and Experience Shower to revive and invigorate.  A soothing Relaxation Sanctuary offers four reclining beds with integrated headphones playing soothing music with  fruit, herbal teas and magazines available.

Both the pools and thermal suite are complimentary for all hotel guests to use between the opening hours of 8am to 8pm. The Club Spa is part of Feelunique.com, Europe’s leading health and beauty retailer and uses luxury brands Darphin and Decleor.

NL Women- Bisila Bokoko: Spain’s first Black Director of the Spain-US Chamber of Commerce

Featured Image

The Afro Spaniard says racism is all about perception and tells us that women can indeed have it all

It is very rare indeed to meet a successful woman in business who is not only at the top of her game professionally, but also strikes a chord with you on a basic level. The first I ever heard of Bisila Bokoko was when she managed Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada’s break into the Nigerian fashion scene in 2014 as the brand ambassador. She’s like the Olivia Pope of the business world. You’ve got a business that needs to expand into new markets? Bisila’s your girl. She’s been doing this for over 15 years which is why she’s trusted by big brands to help them make that transition from Spain to beyond.

Watching her speak, she gives off this effortless impression that she’s one of those whose for whom success has come easily, but when you dig deeper, there’s more to this successful entrepreneur than meets the eye and a whole lot more young women in business can learn from her attitude to life and remarkable success.

Bisila Bokoko is the former head of the US-Spain Chamber of Commerce, where she held the role of Director for 7 years. She is the first black person (and only woman) to have held such an esteemed role in Spain.

I can understand why she made headlines during her tenure at the Chamber. Tall and elegantly dressed as she perches on a sofa at the Westbury Hotel in Bond Street, Bisila’s fashion sense is impeccable and I can’t help but admire her.

She smiles, telling me fashion has always been her first love. These days she spends her days heading up her own cooperate agency, Bisila Bokoko Embassy Services International (BBESI) in New York. The boutique service helps bridge the gap between a myriad of international markets including gastronomy, fashion, beauty, lifestyle, arts and culture with the aim of representing  international interests and helping brands take their business to the next level. Bisila has also received recognition and awards for her work in Philanthropy with the Bisila Bokoko African Literacy Project which builds libraries in villages in Africa. The charity already has a presence in Zimbabwe, Ghana, Uganda and Kenya with plans to take the project to more countries.

Born to parents from Equatorial Guinea who moved to Spain in the 70’s, Bisila started her career as an intern for the Spanish Government at the regional office in Valencia, working her way up to managerial level where she was in charge of marketing and promoting the city. Four weeks after having her second baby, she was offered the role of the Director of the US- Spanish Chamber of Commerce- a role she says changed her life and helped mould her into the amazing businesswoman she is now. “I was actually approached by the previous director who said to me, I think you’d be great for my role and I remember saying to him, I’ve just had a baby 4 weeks ago and I have another one waiting for me at home, how on earth am I going to be able to take on this on?

The prospect was daunting for someone whose former position mainly involved making decisions on how to allocate money to promote the city of Valencia. Her new role would involve being in charge of a much bigger office, larger staff and the added responsibility of generating income and not just spending it. “I had no idea what to do or how to go about it and for the first three months, I pretty much didn’t step out of my office than to breastfeed my baby because I felt I had to learn everything about this role and listen to the people who had been there before me because they knew more than I did. I realised that I couldn’t do this on my own, so I made the best use of my team and delegated as much as possible.”

Bisila’s new role would see her lead many Spanish delegations to various countries, building new relationships for Spanish businesses internationally; helping brands including Zara, Desigual and Mango and companies in various other sectors break into new markets. Many of those times, she was the only person of colour and often the only female too in those delegations. Was she ever daunted by this? “Yes, of course,” she tells me. “As a woman and a black person, we put this pressure on ourselves to prove to others that we’re worth it when we’re given an opportunity such as the one I had.” Bisila’s recipe for being a successful ‘lady boss’ in the midst of what is essentially a man’s world is to ‘embrace your feminine side’ and actually use it to your advantage.

“When we’re in leadership positions, women tend to forget about themselves. We neglect the feminine side and try to be like men. I think you have to balance the two; the feminine and masculine energy because they actually work quite well together. I bring a lot of feminine energy to my leadership roles and just let it flow. Women have amazing capabilities, and when we use the male energy we focus, but you then stop the feminine energy that lets you see the bigger picture.”

“The first time I ever headed a boardroom meeting, I was in a room with only two women and all these men in the room were almost double my age, I was only 30 at the time. I remember I prayed before going in as I was a little intimidated. You get into this huge room with about 40 people asking you questions and you have to convince them that their decision to hire you is justified. As black women we put this pressure on ourselves because we’re black and we’re women. You feel like you have to do better than everybody else. I said to myself it’s not even fair to put this kind of pressure on myself, so I released the pressure by just seeing myself as a professional person. I interact with a lot of men in my work and I never really had the feeling that someone was only picturing me as a black person or as a woman. I realised that it was really about my perception. If I change my perception about myself then people would treat me the way I deserve to be treated.”

Photo: Bisila Bokoko

How about racism I ask her? Unlike the UK, the population of people from black ethnic minority groups in Spain is considerably less. Immigrants from sub Saharan countries represent only 4% of the immigrant population in Spain, making up a very small minority of a new surge of foreigners coming to live in the country. Growing up in 1970’s Spain, the 41 year old says she hardly experienced racism in the country. “I always asked get asked this question about whether or not I experienced racism. Yes, I did in my early years and I think it had more to do with me.” (She pauses).

“I’ve discovered through my journey that when you start thinking that you’re not good enough because people are labelling you as black- we are a mirror of what is inside us so this is what you’ll portray outside. As Africans we have so much to offer, why shouldn’t we be confident? We shouldn’t think we’re less than others. I never feel like I don’t deserve the best. I totally deserve the best treatment, the best respect, beautiful places like everybody else and that’s why when I enter a room, that’s what I exude, I don’t feel like anyone will treat me differently.”

Spain is not like the UK where you have so many Africans. I was born in 1974 and my father said that he was the only black person pushing the stroller on the street. Also when I was going to school, we were like a circus attraction in the school. They’d tell us to go from class to class so everybody can see you. I lost my fears to being the centre of attraction from back then. Besides Spaniards are extremely friendly people. I have an amazing relationship with Spain and I’ve always felt like I really belong.”

Nowadays, when she’s not at home with her 2 children and husband, she’s running her business empire which also now includes a wine company- Bisila Wines. Other times, she’s working on her Not for profit foundation, and then she has other commitments; like writing for the Huffington Post where she details her experiences globe-trotting around the world in aid of charity and on behalf of her clients. She seems to have her hands in so many pies, so how on earth does she stay on top of things?

Bisila in Africa. Photo: Bisila Bokoko

Bisila in Africa. Photo: Bisila Bokoko

“You just have to prioritise,” she says. “I feel the busier you are the more organised you have to be. My months are organised ahead with July, August and Christmas blocked out for family time. I’ve learnt to have at least two hours a day for myself- I do Pilates, running or read a book. I used to be a workaholic, sleeping for only three hours a day sometimes, but I guess with age everything changes. In my 30’s, I was like running and didn’t even know where I was running to.”

I think the 30’s are a very important time for a woman, because you have the time to do everything; to have kids, to build your momentum in your career so yes, you do sleep less and work more and reap the benefits in your 40’s hopefully. I’m one of those who believe that we can have it all. Women sometimes think oh, if I want to have a family, I have to put off the career, but there is never a right moment, you never have enough money and you’re never in the right place because when you get there, you want more. Just do things in the moment you feel like you have to do it and don’t wait for the right time because there is no right moment. Life takes you to the right places and sometimes you just have to relax and enjoy the ride.”

West Africa’s weirdest market

Featured Image

VENTURES AFRICA – Africa, renowned for some of the most beautiful tourist destinations and historic landmarks, is also home to quite a number of bizarre spots, one of which can be found in Togo’s capital city, Lomé. Togo’s Akodessewa Market is recognized as the largest fetish (voodoo) market in the world, a one-stop shop for any Voodoo doctor looking for the right “ingredients.”

When approaching the market, it may seem like only a dusty deserted mechanic workshop lined with wooden tables. However the minute you get close enough and sight the piles of heads, skins, tails and limbs of various animals, you realize you’ve arrived at Akodessewa Fetish Market.

This market is not your usual fruits and vegetable stall

This market is not filled with the usual grocery stalls

The weirdest things imaginable could be found in this market – from the heart of a horse to aged monkey skulls or from snake skins to heads of gorillas. These are obviously not bound for the cooking pot, rather they are objects for traditional medicine capable of giving even the most macho adventure-seeker a bout of the creepy crawlies.

However voodoo is but a dramatised pop-culture caricature of ‘voudon’. It has very little to do with so-called voodoo dolls or zombies. It is an Afro-Caribbean religion which originated in Haiti, though followers can be found in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and other parts of the world. The voudoun practise can be traced back to the time of slavery in many of the West African countries including Nigeria and Ghana. But despite the growing rate of globalisation, many remain ardent believers in the power of these local healers and their ability to evoke spirits and heal a myriad of ailments.

The merchants specialise in the sale of different animal parts

Broken up and drunk, rubbed on the skin or swallowed, the animal parts come from all over West Africa, and so do the customers. Couples who can’t have babies, footballers who want to make the game a one-man show, people who require extra wealth; all these can be provided at the world’s biggest voodoo market. A lot of eccentric travellers venture all the way to Togo just to have a feel of this voodoo pharmacy. For those who need more than the pictures to be convinced, the voodoo chief addresses that by giving a tour of the market.

It is sure to drive animal activists’ berserk but for those eccentric enough to travel there, it is a chance to learn about various herbs and their uses. The merchants are convinced that there’s something for everyone who visits this market.

Ankara is now more than an attire for Africans

Featured Image

Today Ankara is used to customize cars, tomorrow who knows?

VENTURES AFRICA – A couple of weeks ago, I was skimming through Linda ikeji‘s blog–which is the most visited in Nigeria–when I came across something rather crazy but unique: a sports car customised with Ankara fabric was recently spotted in Yenogoa, Bayelsa state. The following Friday, my colleague walked into the office wearing stilettos covered in yellow and black Ankara print, and a matching bag. This, however wasn’t surprising, it is the current trend.

ankara car

Did the Ankara craze just get crazier?

Over the last five years, Ankara has gone from being  an attire perceived as unique to traditional Africa to becoming one of the most utilized materials in design and beautification. From beaded necklaces to phone cases, Ankara is gradually creeping its way into becoming an essential element of decoration across the continent, and beyond. So what do people find so fascinating about Ankara?

My colleague at the office, Tobi Eyinade, who wears Ankara-inspired outfits every Friday, told me that she loves it because they are readily available at any local market. She also explained that Ankara designs are very beautiful and versatile, allowing you to evolve with the trends either as a style statement or an accessory (pointing to her purse which is about 80 percent covered in prints).

Efe Okanigbe, who manages an accessories store in the newly-built Ikeja City Mall, Lagos, also explained that most customers are highly attracted to jewellery made from Ankara, especially to match their other print outfits. She also believes that Ankara is here to stay. “It will never grow old, although change is inevitable I think it will withstand the test of time.”

Kerry Washington rocks African print during the Django movie premier

Beyond the shores of Africa, Ankara is also being embraced. With the emergence of numerous Ankara-inspired fashion shows, celebrities like Beyonce and Kerry Washington now grace red carpet events wearing “African prints.”

This renewed attraction is helping to resuscitate Nigeria’s textile industry, which once held 175 textile mills, with a workforce of approximately one million people, and accounted for more than 60 percent of the West African market. It is further strengthening trade ties between Nigeria and China, one of the world’s biggest producers of Ankara. The growing trade relationship, however, has led to smuggling of textiles from Chinese factories, through the Niger-Nigeria border, to the major markets of Kano and Kaduna. Most of these illegal activities have been attributed to increased demand for Ankara across West Africa.

American Museum honours Dame Vivienne Westwood with fashion exhibition

Featured Image

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia yesterday announced it would be playing host to an exhibition in honour of acclaimed fashion designer Vivienne Westwood.  The exhibition titled Dame Vivienne Westwood, Dress Up Story – 1990 Until Now,  is curated by SCAD Trustee André Leon Talley, at the SCAD Museum of Art.

From Westwood’s groundbreaking Spring/Summer ’91 collection Cut, Slash, and Pull through the current collections, Dress Up Story highlights more than 33 designs realized in collaboration with her creative partner and husband Andreas Kronthaler.

The British designer is also known as a nonconformist, artist, and an activist who has lent her voice to environmental causes. The exhibition features garments, accessories, and fashion show footage that highlight her innovative pattern making, instinctual use of fabrics, and distinctive technique.

My clothes are more subversive than they’ve ever been,” said Dame Vivienne. “In a world of conformity, they offer a real choice.” Her oeuvre remains a poignant representation of contemporary life, as she skillfully deconstructs and arranges symbolic cultural elements into new and surprising creative designs.

Curator of the exhibition André Leon Talley took inspiration from an eccentric British celebration, describing the exhibition as “A post modern romp of a weekend party where the swells meet the activists, where the rogues go vogue, and the vogues go rogue.”

Selections from the SCAD Museum of Art’s Earle W. Newton collection of British and American paintings, hung salon style, create a backdrop for the revolutionary flair of the garments.  Dame Vivienne adds, “Our costumes are romantic and theatrical, inspired by history. We know the characters they belong to. Whoever chooses to wear them re-creates the clothes in her own image making them classics. She inhabits a parallel world – like this one but more ideal. Andreas and I have been designing for 25 years, living and working together. It’s our story. We always dress up.”

The exhibition will take place from May 19 through September 13, 2015
