Angel Di Maria Gets One-Year Prison Sentence, Fined £1.76m For Tax Fraud While At Real Madrid

Featured Image

Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria has been given a one-year prison sentence and fined 2 million euros (£1.76million) after pleading guilty to two counts of tax fraud at Real Madrid in Spain.

However, the former Manchester United forward is unlikely to spend any time behind bars though – most sentences under two years in Spain are suspended for first-time offenders.

It is understood that Di Maria agreed to a deal with Spain’s state prosecutor on Wednesday in which the former Real Madrid forward admitted to two counts of tax fraud of almost 1.3 million euros ($1.4 million) in exchange for a lighter sentence.

José Mourinho Has Been Accused Of €3.3m Tax Fraud By Spanish Prosecutors

In a document reviewed by The Associated Press, Di Maria’s lawyer accepted the two counts, which relate to fraud committed in 2012 and 2013. The prosecutor recommended a sentence of 16 months and a fine of nearly 800,000 euros ($890,000).

Di Maria, who currently plays for French club Paris Saint-Germain, will likely not serve any prison time because sentences of less than two years for first-time offenders are usually suspended in Spain.

His former Real team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to testify in his tax case on July 31, while Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho also has allegations of fraud against him.

Ronaldo faces no formal charge at this stage and is appearing in court as an ‘investigated person’ and could be fined as much as £37m if he is found guilty.

Also, last month, former Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao and Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao were accused by the prosecutor’s office of not paying all their taxes.

Di Maria’s deal is similar to the one struck by Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano, who was convicted of tax fraud last year and given a suspended one-year sentence.

We Will Get All The Players We Need – Barcelona Sporting Director Robert Fernandez

Featured Image

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez has insisted that he is “satisfied” with the players signed last year and is confident of further strengthening the squad this summer.

Barcelona are in need of more options ahead of the 2017-18 campaign after missing out in La Liga and the Champions League last time out, instead settling for just the Copa del Rey.

Of last summer’s recruits, only defender Samuel Umtiti earned a regular starting spot, but Fernandez claims that it is not easy persuading players to join a club where chances could be limited.

“The main difficulty we have when it comes to signing players is the greatness of this club because it means many players won’t come, as they know they will play little,” he told the club’s official magazine. “The squad will, of course, be strengthened in the positions where we need it and [those who arrive] will be important players.

“We are happy and satisfied with the signings made last year because we think that they will take important steps forward in their careers this season. Players need time to adapt because it’s not easy. They are young players.”

Watford Close To Sealing £8m Deal For Derby County Midfielder Will Hughes

Featured Image

Watford are close to landing Derby’s highly-rated midfielder Will Hughes, in a deal which could rise to £8m.

An agreement between the two clubs is thought to be close, however a medical is not imminent as Hughes is currently in Poland as part of England’s U21s European Championships squad.

Will Hughes was one of the country’s brightest teenagers when he made his debut for Derby as a 16-year old in 2011.

However he suffered a cruciate ligament injury at Bolton during the opening game of the 2015/16 season and was side-lined for 8 months.

Hughes has scored nine goals in 165 appearances for Derby.

Hughes’ agent is Paolo Vernazza, the former Watford midfielder, and negotiations are now at an advanced stage between the two clubs.  Gary Rowett, the Derby manager, is prepared to sell players to raise money for transfers and is reluctantly ready to bring Hughes’ spell in the east Midlands to an end.

Report: Barcelona Agree Deal To Sign Brazilian Midfielder Lucas Lima

Maradona Calls Dani Alves An Idiot

Featured Image

Diego Maradona has branded Brazilian defender, Dani Alves an idiot, after he criticised the way he won the world cup for Argentina.

Maradona palmed the ball into the net in the 2-1 win over England back in 1986, and went on to win the world cup.

In the same match, the Argentina legend dribbled past five players to score for Albiceleste, however, Alves does not think he should be seen as a role model.

“You want to compare Messi to Maradona? You can’t compare them,” Alves told Brazilian channel Canais Esporte Interativo.

“I would not be proud to say that I won a World Cup with a ‘Hand of God.’ I wouldn’t be able to tell my son that I won a World Cup like this with the whole world talking about it.

“The ‘Hand of God’ tricked us, you have to take this firm position. A sportsman like this can’t be an example for youngsters.”

However, Maradona has now hit back, insisting that Alves is a bad example of a full-back, and has also mocked his playing position.

“Dani Alves is an idiot. He makes 28 passes and only gets four right. As a ‘4’ [right-back], Cafu and Maicon were good. Dani Alves? Poor thing,” he replied, via TyC Sports.

“He speaks because he plays in a position on the pitch where football is not played. They [right-backs] touch the ball three times and make eight fouls per game.”

Fury Clapbacks At AJ After Criticism

Featured Image

Anthony Joshua recently branded Tyson Fury as boring and the former heavyweight champion has hit back with a scathing response on social media.

Joshua dismissed Fury’s criticism of his win over Klitschko, by sayung his fellow Brit, failed to entertain the media in his win over the Ukrainian.

And the suspended British boxer hit back on Instagram, pointing to the fact that Joshua had to suffer a knockdown before winning at Wembley.

“Better to win and be boring than getting dropped all over the floor and scraping a win,” said Fury. “I never got punched, you got carried off the canvas nearly.

“But winning is winning whether you win by an inch or a mile. It’s still winning and I still won.

“Let’s get it on then. I don’t need no warm-up fights.”

He later made a reference to Floyd Mayweather while discussing Joshua’s comments in a further video on social media.

“Now AJ says I’m a boring fighter, but then looks up to Floyd Mayweather,” said Fury. “Floyd has been a master of hitting and not being hit back, and if you look at his last 10 fights he has maybe had one knockout.

“It’s not about the power, how hard you can punch, how good you can take one.

“It’s about the defence and hitting them and not taking the return. Almost like a fighter jet flying in the sky, he hits and then manoeuvres fast, so he doesn’t get any returns, and that’s what boxing is about.”

UEFA Confirm Admission Of RB Leipzig And Salzburg To UCL

Featured Image

The Champions League governing body, UEFA have confirmed that both RB Leipzig and Salzburg will play in the competition.

Both clubs are sponsored by Red Bull and there were thoughts they would not be able to compete, due to a potential violation of Article 5, which relates to the integrity of the competition.

However, UEFA has found no wrongdoing and now RB Leipzig , who qualified in their first season in the topflight, will compete alongside sister club, Salzburg, who qualified by winning the Austrian Bundesliga.

“The Adjudicatory Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) has decided to accept the admission of both FC Salzburg and RB Leipzig to the UEFA Champions League 2017/18, having found that Article 5 (Integrity of the competition) of the competition regulations is not breached,” an official statement reads.

“Following a thorough investigation, and further to several important governance and structural changes made by the clubs (regarding corporate matters, financing, personnel, sponsorship arrangements, etc.), the CFCB deemed that no individual or legal entity had anymore a decisive influence over more than one club participating in a UEFA club competition.

“This decision may be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport within ten days, in accordance with Article 34(2) of the Procedural rules governing the UEFA Club Financial Control Body – Edition 2015, as well as Articles 62 and 63 of the UEFA Statutes.

“The CFCB will continue to monitor both clubs to ensure that integrity rules are respected going forward.”
