ICYMI: Jack Wilshere Confirms His Exit From Arsenal Football Club

Featured Image

Jack Wilshere says he will be leaving Arsenal when his contract expires at the end of the month.

He has announced the news on Instagram, saying: “Following a number of extensive conversations with those at the club, and in particular a recent meeting with the new manager Unai Emery, I felt that I was ultimately left with little choice but to make the decision that I have due to purely footballing reasons.

“As has widely been reported I, along with my representative, have been in talks with the club for a number of months with the view to signing a new contract to extend my stay at the Emirates.

“My intention throughout these discussions has always been to remain an Arsenal player…Such was my desire to stay that I had in fact recently agreed to sign a financially reduced contract in order to commit my future to the club.

“However, following my meeting with the new manager, I was made aware that although the reduced contract offer remained, it was made clear to me that my playing time would be significantly reduced should I decide to stay.”

I am sure everyone can understand that, at this point in my life and career, I need to be playing regular first-team football and following my meeting with Mr Emery I came away with the feeling that it would be very difficult for me to do so at Arsenal.

Given this, I feel I have no option but to pursue other opportunities in order to progress my career on the pitch.”

Arsenal, who included Wilshere in their initial promotional material for their new home kit, responded to Wilshere’s announcement by placing their thanks for his contributions, especially towards two FA Cup titles in recent seasons.

Everyone at Arsenal would like to wish Jack Wilshere a successful future following his decision to seek new opportunities,” a statement read. “Thank you Jack for your contribution and the fantastic memories. Good luck in the future.”

Wilshere calls time at the Emirates after 197 appearances and 14 goals in all competitions,

#WorldCupWith360nobs: Senegal Record Africa’s First Victory With 2-1 Win Over Poland

Featured Image
Senegal recorded the first African win at the 2018 World Cup when they beat Poland 2-1 on Tuesday thanks to a deflected Thiago Cionek own goal and a terrible error by Polish ‘keeper Wojciech Szczesny.

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak got Poland back in the game with an 86th-minute header but Senegal hung on at Moscow’s Spartak Stadium.

In a match billed as a straight fight between super-strikers Robert Lewandowski and Sadio Mane, neither scored but Liverpool striker Mane set up Idrissa Gueye for the shot that took a wicked deflection off Cionek, leaving Szczesny totally wrong-footed in the Polish goal for Senegal’s opener on 37 minutes.

The west Africans doubled their lead on the 60-minute mark when the experienced Juventus goalkeeper had a moment to forget.

Krychowiak put Poland in trouble with a woeful bouncing back pass, but Szczesny opted rashly to charge out of his penalty area. The speedy Mbaye Niang got in front of his defender, nicked the ball away from Szczesny and rolled it into the empty net.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Senegalese players and incredulity among Poland’s.

After a tight first half hour, it was the always-threatening Niang who was at the heart of Senegal’s opening goal.

The Torino winger won the ball on the halfway line and fed Mane who rolled it sideways to Everton striker Gueye, whose shot skewed off Cionek’s leg and into the net.

Senegal, the 2002 quarter-finalists, could have pressed home their advantage two minutes later but Salif Sane failed to connect with a header.

Minutes after half-time, Sane was fortunate not to be sent off for a challenge on Lewandowski when he brought down the Polish striker as he charged towards goal. He escaped with a yellow card.

Lewandowski curled the free kick over the Senegal wall but Khadim Ndiaye — the only African-based player in Senegal’s squad — pushed it away.

Krychowiak connected with Kamil Grosicki’s cross to give Poland hope, but they were unable to make up the deficit despite four minutes of injury time.

On Sunday, Senegal play Japan, who beat Colombia 2-1 earlier in the day, while Poland will face the South Americans.

Arsenal Set To Announce The Signing Of Bernd Leno From Bayer Leverkusen

Arsenal are set to announce the signing of goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen

Bernd Leno is viewed as the long-term replacement for Petr Cech at the Emirates.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has already signed Swiss World Cup full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free from Juventus, and the addition of Leno suggests he is focused on sorting out Arsenal’s defensive problems.

SportBILD in Germany claims 26-year-old Leno will be presented to the media by Arsenal on Tuesday.

Leno has spent the past seven seasons at Leverkusen, making 233 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

He has earned six caps for Germany, but despite being selected for last year’s Confederations Cup was cut from Germany’s 23-man squad for the World Cup finals.

Cesc Fabregas Showers Accolades On Former Arsenal Vice-chairman David Dein

Featured Image

Cesc Fabregas has taken to social media to praise efforts of former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein.

David Dein took over the position at Arsenal in 1983 and oversaw some very prosperous times for the club, including the appointment of Arsene Wenger and the famed ‘Invincibles’ campaign.

Dein left his role at Arsenal in 2007 to the dismay of many senior figures at Arsenal, including Arsenal Wenger who allegedly offered to step down as manager as a show of solidarity to his longtime friend and colleague.

Arsenal never quite managed to replicate the same success after Dein left, failing to win a single trophy in the seven years immediately after his departure. Dein also had a hand in bringing in many of Arsenal’s former greats during his reign, one of whom was Fabregas.

Fabregas took to Instagram after the meal dinner with David Dein to praise him and state that things were never the same without him in north London.

Brazil Complain To FIFA Over Lack Of Video Assistant Referee Use Vs Switzerland

Featured Image

Brazil Football Confederation (CBF) have written to FIFA ‘questioning the procedures adopted by the VAR’ after feeling that two key decisions that went against them during Sunday’s 1-1 World Cup draw with Switzerland should have been reversed by the technology.

Brazil were very upset that the video assistant referee team did not flag up a push in the back of Miranda by Swiss goalscorer Steven Zuber as he engineered the room to score the decisive equaliser from close range early in the second half.

Brazil also feel they should have had a penalty when Gabriel Jesus was challenged by Manuel Akanji in the area without being penalised.

The letter, addressed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and also directed to the attention of FIFA General Secretary Fatma Samoura and FIFA Referee Committee chairman Pierluigi Collina, declared:

“These two (02) actions constitute, in the opinion of the CBF, clear errors of the referee, which thus should form part of the reviewable decisions that are analysed through the VAR, in accordance with the VAR Protocol.”

The CBF have demanded to know whether Paolo Valeri, the video assistant referee for the game in question, suggested to on-field referee Cesar Ramos that the incidents in questions should be reviewed. They also want to know if Ramos had asked Valeri and the VAR team to look at the incidents, and what the communication between them was.

“CBF respectfully asks to be provided with the video and audio recordings from the VAR, all in order to verify what actually happened,” the letter read.

Harry Kane Eager To Win World Cup Golden Boot – Alan Shearer

England and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has claimed that Harry Kane “would have been desperate to start scoring for England at the World Cup in search of the tournament’s Golden Boot.

Harry Kane scored a brace as England secured a 2-1 win over Tunisia in their first game of the competition on Monday night.

Alan Shearer, one of England’s most prolific forwards and the winner of the Euro 1996 Golden Boot, believes that Kane will have been spurred on by the goalscoring performances of some of his peers in Russia.

“I can’t stress enough the importance and confidence of Kane,” Shearer told BBC Sport. “He’d have been looking at [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Antoine] Griezmann over the last few days.

“The manager [Gareth Southgate] gave him the armband because he’s the go-to player. The goals will have given him great confidence tonight.

Romelu Lukaku has said he will “have fun” at the World Cup despite claiming that “some people in my own country want to see me fail”.

Romelu Lukaku scored twice in the 3-0 victory over Panama in Sochi on Monday.

However, Lukaku feels that many Belgium supporters do not appreciate him and are unaware of the poverty of his childhood.

“When I went to Chelsea and I wasn’t playing, I heard them laughing at me. When I got loaned out to West Brom, I heard them laughing at me.

“But it’s cool. Those people weren’t with me when we were pouring water in our cereal. If you weren’t with me when I had nothing, then you can’t really understand me.

#WorldCupWith360nobs: England Edge Past Tunisia As Harry Kane Scores A Brace

Featured Image

Captain Harry Kane came to the rescue with two goals, the second a dramatic injury-time winner, as England began their World Cup Group G campaign with a stuttering 2-1 win over Tunisia on Monday.

Gareth Southgate’s men almost paid a heavy price for missing a slew of first-half chances when Tunisia’s Ferjani Sassi slotted home a softly-awarded penalty 20 minutes before half-time.

And the North Africans were still level as the game went past the 90-minute mark.

But Harry Maguire won a header from a corner and Kane was on hand at the far post to nod in the winner before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates.

England had started brightly in a blur of passing and movement and could have been two goals up inside the first four minutes.

First Jordan Henderson’s lofted first-time pass released Dele Alli and when the ball eventually broke to Jesse Lingard he saw his shot from six yards saved by the outstretched left boot of Mouez Hassen in the Tunisia goal.

Kane had been kept quiet in the opening salvos but he exploded into action in the 11th minute when he cut inside from the left and saw his shot from the edge of the box deflected wide for a corner.

Ashley Young delivered the set piece for John Stones to rise highest and meet with a powerful header. Hassen saved acrobatically but Kane was on hand to tap home the rebound with his right foot and open his World Cup account.

Hassen, who had injured his left shoulder making an earlier save, could not continue and left the field in tears as he was replaced in goal by Farouk Ben Mustapha.

England continued to press and were made to pay for not converting a succession of chances when they conceded a soft penalty.

Kyle Walker swung a lazy arm across Fakhreddine Ben Youssef who fell as if poleaxed and Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan pointed to the spot, with his decision being upheld by the VAR.

Ferjani Sassi took one step and fired home confidently past the hitherto unemployed Jordan Pickford and Tunisia who had been outplayed for the first half-hour were somehow level 10 minutes before half-time.

Still there was time for Lingard to come close again twice, first from a goalbound shot and then a dink over the keeper which agonisingly struck the post.

Alli too hit the woodwork with a header and England went into half-time wondering how they had not sealed victory already.

England still enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but could not find the same zip and penetration they had enjoyed at the start of the first half.

The ineffective Sterling gave way to Marcus Rashford with just over 20 minutes to go and the Manchester United man almost fashioned a chance straight away with a jinking run into the box.
