Sam Sodje Says Super Eagles Need Foreign Coach

“I won’t really want to say foreign coach is what the Eagles need, but I think the rate at which the team is declining, a foreign coach might be what we should consider at this point, no disrespect to our home-grown coaches,” Sodje told “But we need a proven and good manager, someone who has the credentials to speak for him. If NFF is not ready for such coach, there is no need to get a foreign coach.”

Sodje added that he wasn’t disrespecting the home-trained coaches, but they just weren’t as good as their foreign peers.

“No disrespect to Nigerian coaches, but the fact remains we really lack a top-grade manager,” he said. “There are so many things they can do to improve themselves, though administrators still have a big part to play in this. The sad thing is that the few local coaches I have met think they know everything and then they stop learning.”

Official: Dortmund Acquire Ousmane Dembele

Featured Image

Bundesliga giant, Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of youngster Ousmane Dembele from Rennes.

The teenage forward who has been monitored by Barcelona, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, but has opted to sign a contract that’ll keep him with Dortmund till 2021.

However, Dembele has opted to continue his promising development at Signal Iduna Park.

“Ousmane can play in almost every attacking position,” Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told Dortmund’s official website.

“I have nothing but respect when I see how many high-profile offers from all over Europe Ousmane has turned down and how he has stood firm about his commitment to BVB over such a long period of time.”

Dembele progressed through the youth ranks at Rennes and made his first-team debut for the club against Angers last November.

The France Under-21 international subsequently became a prominent figure in their starting XI and has scored 12 goals in 25 Ligue 1 appearances.

Commenting on his move, Dembele added: “BVB showed a lot of interest in me right from an early stage and they have always kept close contact with me – this really impressed me.

“I am totally convinced of the Borussia sporting concept. I can hardly wait to play in the Bundesliga in front of more than 80,000 spectators at Signal Iduna Park and to walk onto the pitch in the Champions League with my new team-mates.”

Dembele will face stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up at Dortmund, with head coach Thomas Tuchel already able to call on the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Shinji Kagawa, Marco Reus, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Adrian Ramos and Christian Pulisic in attacking positions.

Frank De Boer Quits Ajax

Featured Image

Ajax have announcing the exit of manager Frank De Boer, who agreed to an early termination of his contract.

De Boer has been at the helm of the eredivisie club for five and a half seasons, since 2010.

The Dutch manager won the league four years in a row, but has lost out to PSV in the last two years.

The 2015-16 campaign came to a painful conclusion as Ajax lost out on the title despite being top of the table going into the last week of the season, when their shock 1-1 draw at second-bottom De Graafschap gifted PSV the league.

“After winning four league titles in succession, the 2014-15 season was a disappointment,” said De Boer. “We wanted to rectify that in the last season and we did everything, but it did not become what we had all hoped for and expected.

“I started to realise more that it was time for something else. It’s better for me and I think also for Ajax. What I will do, I do not know yet. A year without a club is also an option and I will see what comes my way.

“I cherish above all the beautiful memories, with winning the 30th league title as the absolute highlight. Wherever I am, I will continue to follow closely. Ajax is my club and always will be.”

The former Netherlands international’s agent Guido Albers recently revealed his client would “love to manage Everton or Valencia” – two of the teams he has been linked with joining.

De Boer’s Ajax contract had been due to expire in July 2017.

Mourinho Will Be Back In July

Featured Image

Former Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho has stated he’ll be back in July, but didn’t mention where.

The Portuguese manager was relieved of his duties at Chelsea, following a poor start to the season.

And having been linked repeatedly with LVG’s job, even though no deal has been made yet, Mourinho is certain of a job by July.

“In July I will be back,” Mourinho told AP. “So we are in May. May to July is nothing. I keep enjoying my life which I’m doing, keep enjoying my family. But in July I am back.

“Of course I miss it.”

He does hold some concerns that a late appointment will mean that he does not have full control over preparations for the campaign ahead.

“It’s difficult because when you get a new club in this period normally the clubs have already done their work,” he said. “I’m not the Chelsea manager but I organised the Chelsea pre-season in many aspects because I did that 10 months ago.

“Clubs always have their commercial, marketing departments involved in everything. When a new manager arrives in May, June it’s very difficult to touch in some points but we know that.

“Scouting is done during the year. We know everybody, so it’s just a question of trying to choose the players that your team needs.”

The ex-Real Madrid boss, who was speaking in Mexico after coaching a FIFA legends team to a 9-8 defeat against a Mexican All-Star outfit, claimed to know nothing of a potential switch to Manchester United.

“I don’t know. I know nothing about it really,” he said. “I don’t have a club and I was waiting for these guys [the FIFA Legends] to win the match to give me a hand but because I lost the match it’s even more difficult to get a club!”

Milner Disappointed At Draw Against Chelsea

Featured Image

James Milner has praised his counterparts for forcing a draw in Liverpool’s last home match of the season.

Hazard’s solo run, was the only difference, as Klopp looked set to lose his 50th game in charge.

However, substitute Benteke was on hand to head in a mistake made by Begovic in injury time.

Milner acknowledged Liverpool had been below par for much of the game, although they still found a way to make sure they avoided losing a week before their Europa League final against Sevilla.

“It’s disappointing not to win the game. We wanted to win,” he told the club’s official website.

“They’re obviously a good team and I know we can play better than we did. We showed in patches what we can do, but I think we were maybe a yard or two off it tonight, for whatever reason.

“It’s a bit disappointing, but we’ve shown that character again to keep going until the end.”

The Italian goalie joined the Turin club in 2001 and has gone on to make almost 600 appearances, winning seven scudetti. Meanwhile, he has made 152 appearances for Italy and lifted the World Cup in 2006.

Despite turning 38 in January, the ex-Parma man remains one of the world’s premier players in his position, and Juve’s decision to offer him a fresh deal confirms that.

Suarez Worried He Would Not Fit Into Barcelona Style

Featured Image

Luis Suarez has revealed he was worried about not fitting into Barcelona’s playing style, when he joined in 2014.

In his debut season, the former Liverpool striker netted 25 times in 43 appearances.

This season, Suarez has scored 56 goals in 51 appearances for the Catalan club.

Upon joining from Liverpool, Suarez did not envision such a prolific spell, admitting he was troubled about fitting into the ‘tiki-taka’ style.

“I never imagined that I would be scoring goals here,” he told ESPN. “I never felt I would adapt to this team’s style of play the way I have.

“Sometimes they start the touches and I think that I can’t do that, that they will play it like that and I will just push it [toward the goal].”

“Man United should have got here at 4 p.m.,”West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan told Sky Sports, blaming United for the unrest. “They know it’s our last game. They had the same problem at Tottenham a few weeks ago. I think the police and officials have been kind. I’d make them kick off at 7.45 p.m. if I was in charge.”

He added: “I’m gravely disappointed, more for our supporters. What people forget is they’ve got trains and buses to get home and we’ve got a wonderful, wonderful show after the game for them. Many just can’t stay any more.”

Hiddink Backs Terry To Continue At Chelsea

Featured Image

Interim manager, Guus Hiddink believes John Terry capable of continuing at the club.

Terry has a contract with the blues that expires at the end of the season, with a contract renewal no where in sight.

The English defender was sent off in the match against Sunderland and will miss the final two games of the season, despite stating his desire to stay, a reply is not forthcoming from the club.

Hiddink stated he remains none the wiser about what direction the club will take regarding a renewal, telling reporters: “When I make a judgement on how he plays and his fitness, at his age, then he’s able to play and continue.

“But it’s up to the club, not for me to make declarations on that. When you come on the pitch for training after being sent off it’s not the most beautiful thing, of course.

“In training he started to lift up his morale and trained okay. Of course not being there in the last two games is a blow for him and for us of course as well.

“Yeah, that could have been the last game but that’s not up to me [to decide].”

Asked whether Terry would make a good coach in the future, Hiddink added: “The other day we were sitting next each other before the game in Bournemouth and we discussed about sitting on that spot. It felt good.

“John is very keen – he has always been a leader and tactically you can always rely on him. He can make that step, though you need time to switch off from your career in my experience.”

Falcao To Spend Next Season With Monaco

Featured Image

Radamel Falcao will be playing for Monaco next season, after enduring two difficult seasons in the EPL.

The Colombia international spent a year with United, and managed only four goals in 29 appearances.

His career went further downhill following another disastrous campaign with Chelsea, hindered by injuries, resulting in him missing out on the Copa.

“Monaco made a big investment in me and they want some return on that. They want me back at the club for next season,” he told TYC Sports.

“I need to have minutes, to play, and we’ll see what happens. Monaco want to see what my position is in a year, to see what possibilities I have.

“The project changed, it took a turn in every sense. Today they’re more of a selling club than they were three years ago, when they wanted to put a very strong team together.

“In principle, the idea is that I’ll be with Monaco for that season.”

Falcao says he rejected enquiries from clubs in China and South America in the mid-season transfer window as he is holding out for a return to River Plate in future.

“It looks very difficult to come back to River, because I have two years on my contract [at Monaco],” he said.

“Options in China, Mexico and Brazil were talked about a bit, but if I were to go back to America, the idea is River, so I didn’t move.”

Hummels To Join Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have announced the capture of Borussia Dortmund captain, Mats Hummels.

The defender already stated his desire to return to his boyhood club and follow in the footsteps of Lewandowski and Gotze.

And both clubs have announced the switch, with Hummels signing a five year deal with a club he left in 2008 for Dortmund.

The 27-year-old appears set to captain BVB for one last time when Thomas Tuchel’s side meet Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final on May 21.

Hummels told Dortmund’s official website: “I have not made this decision easily after eight-and-a-half successful years at BVB.

“I was always proud and still am, to wear the BVB jersey and to be part of this exceptional team. Before I return to my hometown in the summer, we have a large, common goal all: once again to bring the DFB-Pokal to Dortmund.

“For that I will give everything just like my team-mates. I wholeheartedly thank my team-mates, all the staff and fans for this long and wonderful time in Black and Yellow.”

Confirmation of Hummels’ signing quickly followed Bayern’s capture of prodigal Portuguese winger Renato Sanches from Benfica in a deal that could be worth €45 million.

Messi Sad To Miss Olympics

Featured Image

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has stated he would have loved to play in the Olympics.

Gerardo Martino opted against picking the Barcelona star for both the Copa and the Rio event.

But Messi, who is on the cusp of another La Liga title heading into the final round of the season, has still conceded he is disappointed not be involved for the campaign in Rio de Janeiro.

“I would have liked to go because it was a spectacular experience for me to play in the [2008] Olympics, just as it was for the [2005] Under-20 World Cup,” Messi told ESPN.

“Not just because we won, but for the experience I gained.

“It was a great experience to stay in the Olympic Village and meet other elite athletes from other sports and to be just another athlete among them.

“That was very spectacular even though we didn’t spend a lot of time in the village.

“The World Cup is great but the Olympics are something special.”

Argentina – runners-up to Chile at last year’s Copa America – will now have a fully-focused Messi at their disposal as they bid to win the competition for the first time since 1993.

The 14-time champions – drawn in Group D – will face defending champions Chile in a rematch of the 2015 final on June 6 in the United States, followed by games against Panama and Bolivia.

“It is a new Copa, different. Very nice in the United States and very different from what I have played before because of the people, the stadiums,” Messi said.

“That will make it different and for us, a new chance.”

“The goal meant a lot because it has been a tough time for me on the pitch as I have missed a bit of efficiency, a bit of luck and a lot of things,” Giroud told Arsenal Player.

“Things haven’t gone my way to [allow me to] finish, but I kept the faith and knew that it would come back.

“It is always nice for a striker to score and it was even better to also get an assist for Alexis’ second goal which was important.

“These last few weeks I tried to set up goals. [Alexis’ goal] was my sixth assist but I’m happy to score too and help the team to reach our target and qualify for the Champions League. We now have our own destiny in our hands to finish third or maybe second.

“We are a team and a group that makes the difference. We try to help each other do the job. We fight for each other and we have a good understanding.”

Giroud has scored 21 goals in all competitions for Arsenal this campaign.
